Thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends of Alexandria City Marshal candidate Jimmy Chevalier.
According to published reports, 59-year-old, Chevalier of Woodworth, passed away Thursday night at Rapides Regional Medical Center. No word yet on his exact cause of death.
Chevalier served as an Alexandria Police officer, as well as, a Rapides Parish Sheriff’s deputy - each for 16 years.
He was also a graduate of the FBI National Academy and had plans of using his intensive experience to key in on training and updating courtroom security if he won office.
The Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office say as a result of his passing, qualifying for that seat is now re-opened. If you’re interested, you can stop by the Rapides Parish Registrar’s Office Friday until 4:30 p.m., Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
If there aren’t any additional qualifiers, the Secretary of State’s Office says Chevalier’s votes will not be counted, but nothing will change with those of his opponents, however, if there are additional qualifiers, the state will put a block on all votes for the Alexandria City Marshal Seat and move the election to November 4th.
The office says the last time something like this happened was a year ago when a longtime Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee died while running for re-election.
