FORT POLK, La. - The 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, welcomed its new commander in a ceremony here Friday on Honor Field.
Col. Bruce P. Antonia replaced Col. Mark A. Dewhurst, who led the brigade on a 14-month deployment to Baghdad that ended in January.
The 10th Mountain Division Commander, Maj. Gen. Michael L. Oates, flew from Fort Drum, N.Y., to be part of the ceremony. “Bruce, I have absolute confidence in you,” Oates said. “You’re going to have the ride of your life.”
Antonia told the Soldiers on the parade field, “You look great out there. I am honored and humbled to be part of this brigade.”
Dewhurst thanked the assembled volunteers, civilians, spouses, and Soldiers, then told the command sergeants major he had served with, “The biggest compliment I can give you is: If my sons join the military, I want you to train and lead them.”
Antonia’s previous duty assignments include commander of 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, where he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Battalion operations officer and executive officer of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division.
His many awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with V-device and one Oak Leaf cluster, the Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf clusters. He has earned the Ranger Tab, the Senior Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Expert Infantryman Badge.
He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy.
