25-year-old targets La. incumbent in Congress race
RAYVILLE, La. (AP) - Delayed by a month, U.S. Representative Rodney Alexander faces a quixotic challenge from a fellow Republican barely old enough to run for Congress.
Alexander’s primary race against political rookie Andrew Clack was postponed from September 6th to October 4th because of Hurricane Gustav, though political observers say the election is a
formality: the challenger has little chance of winning. With no Democrats running, the primary on Saturday determines the winner of the congressional seat.
At 25, Clack is just old enough to register as a candidate for Congress. With no political experience, little money and an incumbent opponent, he acknowledges his campaign isn’t likely to
succeed.
Alexander is a three-term incumbent and Louisiana’s only member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee. He easily won re-election in 2006 against challengers who - like Clack - were new
to politics.
Clack said he’s never met Alexander but generally likes his voting record, particularly his conservative stance on social issues.
