TOPS Funding

RUSTON, La. (AP) - Louisiana Tech University President Dan
Reneau says he remains a firm supporter of the state’s Taylor
Opportunity Program for Students or TOPS that pays tuition at
in-state schools for high-achieving high school students.
The program has come under the spotlight recently after LSU
President John Lombardi suggested TOPS awards be capped and not
given to students from families who make more than $100,000 each
year, regardless of academic performance. Lombardi suggests using
that money for more financial aid for low-income families.
Reneau tells The News-Star the state could “tweak” TOPS but
should not drastically alter the award program at a time when the
state is losing many of its college graduates.
