LSU-Jefferson

Jefferson returns to practice for LSU

<dc:subject>Jefferson returns to practice for LSU</dc:subject>

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Jordan Jefferson is expected to practice
throughout the week and No. 10 LSU is hopeful its starting
quarterback will be able to play after missing the last game with a
sprained right ankle.
Jefferson sat out last Saturday’s 24-16 victory over Louisiana
Tech, with Jarrett Lee filling in and completing 7 of 22 passes for
105 yards.
“Jefferson returns to practice today,” Miles said Monday. “I
think that being on the sideline for him is an uncomfortable
position. I think that he hates missing a game, and he is looking
forward to getting back. ... I kind of look forward to him getting
back, too.”
Also expected back at practice this week were tight end Richard
Dickson (thigh) and center T-Bob Hebert (ankle). Both sat out
against Louisiana Tech.
Miles said a New Year’s Day bowl bid and top-five national
ranking are among the goals he’s outlined as LSU heads into its
final two regular season games. After playing at Ole Miss this
weekend, LSU returns home to play Arkansas.
The Tigers are trying to finish among the nation’s top five
teams for the third time in four years.
“The finish we all like is to be a team that’s ranked in the
top five or above and be an elite team in this conference. That’s
how we want to play,” Miles said.
LSU hardly played the part of an elite team against Louisiana
Tech, which threatened to beat the Tigers for the first time since
1904 after taking a 13-10 halftime lead. The performance drew some
boos from the Tiger Stadium crowd.
Miles said his players lacked the proper mental approach during
that game. He was particularly bothered about the defense’s
first-half performance.
      “The defense played with
a-somebody-else-is-going-to-make-a-play mentality in the first
half,” Miles said. “Then, the defense came to life. It was a tale
of two halves for our defense. When they turned it on, they played
like our defense is supposed to be.”
The Bulldogs gained 93 of their 322 yards in the second half.
Louisiana Tech was effective with Daniel Porter running the ball
out of the wildcat formation. The Tigers will see much more of that
attack Saturday from Ole Miss’ Dexter McCluster.
“The style of athlete Tech employed is not as talented as the
ones from Ole Miss,” Miles said. “But, we did gain a view of the
style of running used by Ole Miss.
LSU and Ole Miss are competing for second place in the SEC West
behind Florida and Alabama.
Coach Houston Nutt’s Rebels dominated the Tigers in their 31-13
victory last season in Baton Rouge. In 2007, Nutt’s Arkansas team
upset then No. 1-ranked LSU 50-48 in triple overtime at Tiger
Stadium.
“This Ole Miss team is very talented,” Miles said. “They’ll
come to play. Their offense with Dexter McCluster, Jevan Snead and
Brandon Bolden can run it and throw it.
“The combination of McCluster and Bolden brings power and
speed. They are tough to touch. Snead can do everything you want a
quarterback to do. Then, their defense plays a very physical brand
of football.”

By BRETT MARTEL
AP Sports Writer
METAIRIE, La. (AP) - For Saints offensive tackle Jon Stinchcomb,
it’s all about perspective.
Since he was drafted by New Orleans in 2003, he’s been part of
only two winning teams. The second of those is this year’s edition,
which reached the franchise’s first-ever 9-0 record at St. Louis on
Sunday despite one of its least impressive performances all season.
“I enjoy being able to talk about how we’re winning, because
I’ve been around the Saints long enough to appreciate the line of
questioning being that we’re not winning by the huge margins that
we could be,” Stinchcomb said. “It’s not easy to win in this
league.”
New Orleans needed to break up a pass in the end zone as time
expired to survive their closest game of the season, a 28-23
triumph over a Rams team that has won only once all year.
Yet coach Sean Payton said there were reasons to be proud of his
team’s performance, despite a couple of troubling trends that have
made New Orleans look a little more vulnerable in recent weeks.
Payton noted that three defensive starters - cornerback Jabari
Greer (groin), safety Darren Sharper (left knee) and defensive
tackle Sedrick Ellis (right knee) - missed the game entirely and a
fourth was lost when cornerback Tracy injured his left knee.
“I was proud we responded with both corners being out for a
good portion of that game. Obviously our defensive tackle, Darren
Sharper, our safety - we overcame some things against a team that
was coming off a bye and a win,” Payton said. “We can play better
football, yet I think the team we played is getting better. ... To
get that win on the road against a team that was coming off a week
rest, and to get that win despite some of our mistakes is
encouraging.”
Only two of the Saints’ nine victories have come by fewer than
double digits, the other being a 35-27 win over Atlanta in which
the Falcons kicked a late field goal.
In many of their victories, the Saints outscored their opponents
not only with prolific offense but also their big-play defense,
which has scored seven touchdowns this season on five interception
returns and two fumble returns.
Recently, however, the Saints’ offense have been turning the
ball over - 13 times in their last four games.
Drew Brees was intercepted twice by the Rams, once on a tipped
pass. Brees has turned the ball over 10 times in the last four
games on seven interceptions and three fumbles.
Payton said he is always concerned about turnovers, but his
confidence Brees overall remains unshaken, adding that some of his
turnovers have more to do with the receivers not catching balls or
linemen not blocking well enough. He also pointed out that Brees is
still making clutch throws, such as his 27-yard touchdown pass to
Robert Meachem in the back of the Rams’ end zone.
“There’s a big reason why we’re 9-0 and it starts with Drew
Brees,” Payton said. “He’s his own worst critic. If you asked
who’s hardest on Drew Brees, it would be Drew Brees. And yet, he
has made a ton of plays for us. The throw to Meachem was
unbelievable.”
In the end, Brees was 18 of 26 for 223 yards and two touchdowns
against the Rams, but for the interceptions a solid day for an NFL
quarterback. Kickoff returner Courtney Roby and running back Reggie
Bush also provided big plays to put New Orleans over the top. Bush
had 83 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries, including a
55-yard run.
Roby’s 97-yard kickoff return marked the Saints first TD on a
kickoff since 2004.
On the injury front, a couple defensive starters could return on
Sunday when the Saints travel to Tampa Bay to play another one-win
team. Greer said he was optimistic he could return. Sharper already
has practiced since hurting his knee but decided to rest in St.
Louis. Ellis has missed three games and Payton said recently that
he should return soon, though he did not specify whether he’d be
back this week.
The Saints even got some good news on Porter, who initially
thought he might have a season-ending knee injury but wound up with
only a sprained medial collateral ligament that Payton said would
not require surgery. There’s not timetable yet on his return.

      <dc:subject>Bush's 2 TD's help Saints stay unbeaten</dc:subject>

By R.B. FALLSTROM
AP Sports Writer
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Reggie Bush helped the New Orleans Saints
overcome another bundle of mistakes to stay unbeaten for the best
start in team history.
Bush scored twice for the first time in more than a year and
Drew Brees compensated for two interceptions with two touchdown
passes that allowed the Saints to escape with a 28-23 victory
Sunday over the St. Louis Rams.
Courtney Roby opened the second half with a 97-yard kickoff
return and Robert Meachem’s 27-yard grab early in the fourth
quarter gave New Orleans (9-0) just enough breathing room to tie
the franchise record with nine straight wins.
“You’re not going to blow everyone out,” said cornerback
Randall Gay, who played on the Patriots’ 16-0 team in 2007. “It’s
a lot harder to blow teams out when for a lot of teams, this is
like their playoff game.”
Marc Bulger’s 19-yard pass to Donnie Avery made it a five-point
game with 2:44 to go and the Rams (1-8) made it to the New Orleans
32 before Bulger threw incomplete into the end zone on the final
play.
The Rams had no timeouts on their final drive and burned a lot
of clock on Bulger’s 5-yard checkdown to Steven Jackson the
previous play, leaving them just enough time for one final snap.
“It would have been really nice to pull it off,” Bulger said.
“There’s a reason they’re unbeaten. They made plays when they had
to.”
The Rams had a season high for points against a defense that
played most of the second half without both starting cornerbacks.
Tracy Porter limped off with a left knee injury in the opening
minute and Jabari Greer was inactive because of a hurt groin.
Turnovers hurt more. The Saints had three for a four-game total
of 13.
They also stalled on offense late in the game, scoring fewer
than 30 points for the first time in five games, and opening the
door for the Rams.
“We’re not content with where we’re at, and we’re certainly not
content with the way we’ve played these last few weeks,” Brees
said. “We need to close the game out when we’re given the
opportunity.”
St. Louis got big games from Avery, who caught two touchdown
passes, and Jackson, who had 131 yards and a touchdown on 26
carries and totaled a season-high 176 yards from scrimmage.
The Rams faced their third straight unbeaten team at home - a
first in NFL history. They fared much better against the Saints
than against the Colts (a 42-6 drubbing) and Vikings (a 38-10
loss).
“Tough one,” coach Steve Spagnuolo said. “Tough, tough,
tough, tough.”
Jackson was at his bruising best again for the Rams, who were
coming off their bye and a victory over the Lions the week before
that ended a 17-game losing streak. He has 6,206 yards in his sixth
season, passing Lawrence McCutcheon (6,186) for third on the
franchise career list.
Before exploiting the Rams with 83 yards on six carries with a
55-yard jaunt and adding two receptions for 15 yards, Bush hadn’t
done much this season. He scored four touchdowns the first eight
games but with only 194 yards rushing.
“I don’t feel like I’ve dropped off at all,” Bush said. “I
feel like I’m still the same person, I don’t feel any faster or
slower.
“I think coach gave me a lot of opportunities to make plays and
I think I was able to do that today.”
The Rams saw the electrifying player taken second overall in the
2006 draft, and the two-TD game was his first since Oct. 18, 2008.
Bush vaulted over a defender on a 3-yard run for the game’s first
score and won a footrace to a corner of the end zone on a 15-yard
reception.
“Yeah, he’s a handful,” Rams linebacker James Laurinaitis
said. “He’s a game changer.”
NOTES: Jackson’s run for the tying score was only the Rams’
fifth touchdown out of 18 trips inside the 20 all year. ... Rams WR
Keenan Burton (right knee) was carted off after getting hurt on an
end zone interception by Usama Young and has an injury to the
patella tendon. Late October pickup Brandon Gibson stepped in with
his first seven catches of the season, for 93 yards. ... The Rams
forced a total of nine turnovers in their first eight games. ...
The Saints lead the NFL with 17 interceptions.

By BRETT MARTEL
AP Sports Writer
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Keiland Williams’ combination of power
and elusiveness ensured LSU’s century of dominance over Louisiana
Tech would continue.
Williams ran for 116 yards and two second-half touchdowns,
helping the ninth-ranked Tigers fend off the upset-minded Bulldogs
24-16 on Saturday night.
Williams’ first score, on a powerful 3-yard run that moved the
pile, gave LSU (8-2) a 17-13 lead midway through third quarter. His
9-yard TD in the fourth quarter made it a two-score game with a
little over seven minutes to go.
Louisiana Tech (3-7) hasn’t beaten LSU since 1904, but led 13-10
at halftime after running back Daniel Porter took a direct snap on
a fourth-down play and lobbed a 1-yard jump pass to tight end
Dennis Morris as time expired in the second quarter.
LSU’s defense locked down the Bulldogs in the second half,
allowing the heavily favored Tigers to overcome a shaky outing by
quarterback Jarrett Lee, who started for the hobbled Jordan
Jefferson.
Lee finished 7 of 22 for 105 yards and one TD. Lee was ridiculed
by Tigers fans a season ago for throwing seven interceptions that
were returned for touchdowns. He was not picked off this time,
though Tech came close twice. Pressured often, Lee threw the ball
away rather than force it into coverage, but was roundly booed for
doing so, one time emphatically so when he drew an intentional
grounding penalty.
The crowd cheered in the fourth quarter when multitalented
freshman Russell Shepard lined up in Lee’s place and scampered 14
yards for a first down, then booed when Lee returned two plays
later.
The boos didn’t last long though, as Lee handed off to Williams
for the running back’s fourth TD of the season. The Tigers won for
the 18th time in 19 meetings between the Louisiana schools.
Matt Nelson had field goals of 30, 33 and 36 yards for the
Bulldogs.
Daniel Porter ran for 64 yards for Tech, becoming the third
player in school history to reach 3,000 career yards rushing. Tech
quarterback Ross Jenkins was 16 of 13 for 143 yards and was sacked
five times.
The bright spot for the Bulldogs was their running game, which
accounted for 178 yards, well above the average of 121 yards
rushing LSU’s defense had been allowing coming in.
LSU went up 10-3 late in the first quarter when Lee hit Brandon
LaFell on a crossing route and LaFell darted into the clear for a
38-yard score. It was LaFell’s 23rd career touchdown, putting him
three behind Dwayne Bowe for the most TD receptions in school
history.
The Bulldogs, which lost 45-35 to No. 6 Boise State a week
earlier, again would not allow a top-10 team to bury them. Tech had
a whopping 11-minute time of possession advantage in the first half
and cut it to 10-6 on Matt Nelson’s second field goal.
At halftime, LSU trotted to the locker room to boos from the
home crowd after a stunning opening 30 minutes that saw Tech take
the lead on a creative play call by coach Derek Dooley.
On fourth down, with 2 seconds left in the second quarter and
the ball just inside the LSU 2, Tech’s offense surprisingly took
the field in place of the field goal unit and shifted into wildcat
formation. Porter took the snap, started forward, the stopped and
lobbed a jump pass to Morris, silencing a boisterous Tiger Stadium
crowd.
A Louisiana Tech spokesman said the play gave the Bulldogs their
first lead over the Tigers since the only time they beat LSU some
105 years ago.

By BRETT MARTEL
AP Sports Writer
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana Tech coach Derek Dooley wasn’t
surprised LSU maintained its No. 9 ranking after losing at Alabama
last weekend.
Dooley saw no reason voters should punish the Tigers for its
only loses coming close games against No. 1 Florida and the
third-ranked Crimson Tide.
“I kind of see it the other way,” Dooley said. “If you lost
to the best team in the country, who’s to say you’re not No. 2. I
would have moved them up when I watched them against Alabama.
They’ve taken the two best teams in the country to the fourth
quarter.”
It may be debatable whether Florida and Alabama are indeed the
two best teams in the country, given that second-ranked Texas also
has yet to lose. Those arguments are irrelevant at this point to
Dooley, whose main concern is the enormous challenge he sees for
Louisiana Tech (3-6) against LSU (7-2) in Death Valley on Saturday
night.
Tech doesn’t have much of a winning history against Louisiana’s
most storied college football program. LSU is 17-1 all time against
the Bulldogs since the teams first met in 1901. Tech’s only win
came by a 6-0 count back in 1904.
“We need to get the awe factor out when we kick off,” Dooley
said. “The good news is we’ve played in (a big game) environment
before ... and I thought we played well. We just didn’t make the
plays at the end of the game to finish, so hopefully we can build
on that.”
A little more than a week ago, Tech hosted then-No. 5 Boise
State on national television and was as close as 30-28 in the
fourth quarter before the Broncos pulled away to win 45-35. The
closer-than-expected result hurt Boise State in the polls as the
Broncos dropped to No. 6.
Now the Bulldogs play a second straight Top 10 opponent.
Tech has been decimated by injuries and is in the midst of a
three-game losing streak, but LSU coach Les Miles doesn’t see
evidence the Bulldogs have quit.
“This Louisiana Tech team’s record is not as good as they would
like, but I can tell you that they play better and better,” Miles
said.
Although LSU’s loss at Tuscaloosa dropped the Tigers out of
contention for a Southeastern Conference title, a New Year’s Day
bowl bid remains in reach with victories against Tech, Mississippi
and Arkansas.
“If we take care of business and win the next three games ... I
still like that opportunity,” Miles said.
With quarterback Jordan Jefferson nursing a right ankle injury,
Jarrett Lee could get his first start of the season for LSU. With
leading rusher Charles Scott out for the remainder of the regular
season with a broken collarbone, Miles said he’ll likely spread
carries among Keiland Williams, Stevan Ridley, Trindon Holliday and
Russell Shepard. Ridley, a sophomore who only recently came back
from a serious knee injury last spring, and Shepard, a freshman,
both have played well recently.
Shepard had touchdowns against Auburn and Tulane, while Ridley
scored against Tulane and Alabama.
When LSU’s offense is on the field, another subplot will feature
a battle of brothers taking place between Tigers right guard Lyle
Hitt and Tech defensive tackle Mason Hitt.
When the Bulldogs get the ball, they’ll try to keep pace with an
offense led by quarterback Ross Jenkins, running back Daniel Porter
and tight end Dennis Morris. Porter has rushed for 732 yards this
season and needs only needs 48 yards to become the third Louisiana
Tech running back to reach 3,000 yards rushing for his career.
Morris has seven touchdowns, the latest being an extraordinary
catch off the back of a Boise State cornerback that made highlight
reels across the country.
Although the Bulldogs won’t be going to a bowl this season,
pulling out an unlikely upset at LSU (the Tigers are three-plus TD
favorites) would go down as one of top moments in Tech football
history.
“LSU is the flagship football program ... so you want to go
down there and compete,” Dooley said. “We expect to go down there
and compete.”

AP Sports Writer
METAIRIE, La. (AP) - Robert Meachem promised during New Orleans’
training camp that he would remind the Saints why they made him
their first-round draft choice in 2007.
Half way into his third season, Meachem has advanced far beyond
the frustration of his rookie season, when he arrived at rookie
camp out of shape, hurt his knee, and wound up spending all 16
regular season games on the inactive list and watching from the
sideline in a sweat suit.
“I’m blessed. I’m living the dream right now,” Meachem said.
“Things weren’t going the way I wanted them to go the first two
years, but I knew once everything settled down and calmed down, I
would be the guy that I am today. So I just kept praying and just
trying to do everything I could on my part to help this team.”
With a clutch, 54-yard, game-tying touchdown catch last Sunday
against Carolina, Meachem further buried the bad memories of his
rookie year, when he heard many critics calling him first-round
bust.
His five catches for 98 yards against the Panthers helped New
Orleans overcome a two-touchdown deficit and win 30-20 to remain
unbeaten at 8-0.
Now getting chances to be on the field in pressure-filled,
late-game situations, Meachem can say he’s played a considerable
role in what is now the best start to a season in the Saints’
43-year history.
With 13 catches for 296 yards and three touchdowns, Meachem has
needed only half of this season to surpass his performance for all
of 2008, when he caught 12 passes for 289 yards and three TDS.
The former Tennessee standout is averaging a team-high 22.8
yards per catch this season.
Payton also has featured Meachem in running plays such as
reverses. He has averaged 10 yards on three carries, with a long of
15.
“I’m encouraged with how Robert’s playing,” Payton said this
week. “We have to continue to find ways to get him the football.
Week in and week out, he’s a guy that has great speed, he’s
powerful and he’s playing with more and more confidence.
“The challenge each week is finding opportunities for him,”
Payton said. “In the second half last week there were some big
plays he made certainly and it was good to see.”
The Saints are deep at receiver, which is one of the reasons
Meachem has to fight for everything he gets. However, opportunities
have opened up lately with Lance Moore’s ankle injury. Also,
Marques Colston was trying to play through the flu last Sunday and
struggled.
Brees was able to turn to Devery Henderson and Meachem for the
bulk of his passing yards, though he expects Colston to play better
in St. Louis this Sunday.
“That’s what our offense has thrived on and prided itself on in
the last few years, guys stepping up and performing very well and
now becoming somewhat of household names,” Brees said. “Nobody
had heard of Marques Colston until mid-way through the 2006 season
when the seventh-rounder from Hofstra was coming out and making
plays and getting opportunities and making the most of them. Devery
is really coming into his own. Meachem - the more opportunities he
gets, he’s playing great. Lance Moore was on the practice squad
when I first got here and now he’s a great player.”
Meachem said he could tell during offseason workouts and
training camp that he was on the brink of finally getting
comfortable as an NFL receiver. Now Brees throws the ball to him
even in coverage at times, confident that Meachem has the speed and
ability to come down with the ball, as he did between two defenders
for a 36-yard touchdown against the New Yok Giants in Week 6.
Those types of plays, Meachem said, “is what I’ve been feeling
in my heart the whole season.”
NOTES: DT Sedrick Ellis (right knee), C Jonathan Goodwin
(ankle), Moore (left ankle) and CB Jabari Greer (groin) sat out
practice on Thursday. FS Darren Sharper (left knee) was limited, as
was Marques Colston, who was coming back from the flu. LB Scott
Fujita (left calf), returned to practice on a limited basis.

AP Sports Writer
WESTWEGO, La. (AP) - The New Orleans Hornets fired Byron Scott
only nine games into the season on Thursday and replaced him with
general manager Jeff Bower, hoping the man who put the current
roster together can get more out of it on the court.
“I told Jeff, ‘The genie’s out of the bottle,”’ Hornets chief
operating officer Hugh Weber said. “Nobody can say he doesn’t have
the right players. ... Jeff has hand-selected this team, and we
like the idea that now he’ll be held accountable for the results.
“Our expectations are high. Our sense of urgency is high. Our
patience is low and we hope that translates into results quickly.”
Scott, who only two seasons ago was the NBA coach of the year,
was fired one day after a 124-104 loss at Phoenix dropped New
Orleans to 3-6.
Bower, who also will remain general manager, immediately moved
to name Tim Floyd his top assistant. Floyd, a former Hornets head
coach, had more recently coached at Southern California. He led USC
to three straight NCAA tournament appearances, then resigned last
June amid allegations he paid to have O.J. Mayo play for the
Trojans. An NCAA investigation of the matter is ongoing.
Bower was Floyd’s assistant coach with the Hornets during the
2003-04 season, and the two are still friends.
“I have a high comfort level with Tim, who has proven himself
to be a quality coach, who has proven himself to have some very
specific areas that he’s outstanding in,” Bower said.
The Hornets were 41-41 in Floyd’s only season, losing in a
seven-game series to the Miami Heat and then-rookie Dwyane Wade in
the first round of the playoffs.
The only player left on the Hornets roster from that season is
David West, a rookie back then who has since become an All-Star.
West said he respected Scott but understood the rationale behind
making a change.
“The good thing is we’re 3-6, so getting back to .500 and
getting going in the right direction isn’t something that’s out of
the realm of possibility,” West said. “With Jeff coming in,
bringing in Tim, for guys who’ve only played for coach Scott, it
will be a dramatic difference.
“We’ve got to be receptive to what this brings because what we
had wasn’t working,” West said. “Hopefully we can get some
different results.”
Chris Paul, who has not played for any NBA coach but Scott, was
not available after players gathered at the club’s suburban
training center. Team officials said he had a prior commitment and
had to leave. Paul was close with Scott. The pair golfed together
and Paul once referred to Scott as a father figure who was closer
to him than many of his own relatives.
“I understand personal relationships,” Bower said. “Chris,
that’s one of his strengths, his ability to connect. And obviously
it’s a very strong personal relationship (with Scott) and that
should remain in place. This is a professional decision and a
professional relationship that we have here and I have a lot of
confidence in what he wants. He wants to win. ... None of us are
pleased from a personal standpoint to ever have a day like today.”
Messages left with Scott’s Los Angeles-area agent, Brian
McInerney, were not immediately returned.
When Scott took over as coach following the 2003-04 season,
replacing Floyd, he was the Hornets’ third coach in three seasons.
The Hornets won only 18 games in Scott’s first season, a rebuilding
year that saw the departure of Baron Davis in a trade with Golden
State.
The following summer, the Hornets drafted Paul, and the team
improved steadily during the next three seasons.
In 2007-08, when Paul and West were named to their first
All-Star game, the Hornets went a franchise-best 56-26 during the
regular season, winning the club’s first division title.
The Hornets went on to beat Dallas in the opening round of the
playoffs before losing to San Antonio in the seventh game of their
Western Conference semifinal series.
Scott was in the final year of a two-year extension worth about
$5 million a year. The Hornets hired him hoping he could repeat
what he did in New Jersey, when he twice took the Nets to the NBA
finals. He wound up 203-216 in a little more than five seasons with
the Hornets.
Scott’s stock in New Orleans began to drop last season, when the
team struggled to make the playoffs as the Western Conference’s
seventh seed before being bounced in the first round by Denver in
five games.
The Nuggets won several lopsided games in that series, including
a Game 4 victory by a whopping 58 points, tying the largest margin
of victory in NBA playoff history.
Before this season started, Hornets owner George Shinn said he
was disappointed to see young players like Brandon Bass, J.R. Smith
and Chris Andersen, who’d been let go by the Hornets while Scott
was coach, thrive elsewhere. He said he wanted Scott to do a better
job developing young players.
Scott’s common response was that he had nothing against young
players, only players who failed to grasp the nuances of the
schemes he put in place. He pointed out that Paul started
immediately as a rookie and flourished right away.
Bower said he studied the team throughout the preseason and the
first nine games of this season, looking for evidence that the team
was improving, and instead saw the squad falling back into the same
stagnant patterns that plagued it a year ago.
Bower said he, Scott and the ownership collectively set out a
plan in the offseason to change things, “And up to now we’re not
satisfied with the way the plan has been executed, so it’s my job
to change that.”
“We believe our personnel has the ability to perform at a much
higher level than it has been.”

<dc:subject>Hoops - Demons tip off Friday night at home</dc:subject>

NATCHITOCHES—The last time Northwestern State tipped off its basketball season at home against East Texas Baptist, things turned out great for the Demons, despite a close call from the Tigers.

That was the start of the 2005-06 season, when NSU had to rally for a 77-74 victory, the first in a magnificent 26-8 campaign highlighted by a first-round NCAA Tournament win over Iowa.

Friday night, East Texas Baptist visits Prather Coliseum for the second straight season and the third in five years, launching the Demons’ 2009-10 slate with a 7:45 matchup that is the back end of a doubleheader with the Lady Demons playing host to Arkansas-Monticello at 5:45.

Nobody is touting this Northwestern team to be a Cinderella in March Madness, but as Mike McConathy starts his 11th season as the Demons’ head coach, he feels good about the approach his team is taking to recover from last year’s 11-20 struggles.

“Our team chemistry is so much better, and we have more depth and energy,” he said. “We have a lot of progress to make but the way we’re going about our business has been good.”

Sophomore 6-8 center Will Mosley, the leading rebounder (8.5) and shot blocker (2.5) returning in the Southland Conference, tops the starting five in McConathy’s deep rotation involving at least two five-man units alternating along with spot substitutions of another 2-4 players.

Senior guard Damon Jones was the Demons’ only double-digit scorer last year (12.2 average). Senior point guard Michael McConathy averaged 8 points, 4 assists and 1.6 steals and begins the season eighth all-time at NSU with 297 career assists.

Other starters are junior swingman Dominic Knight and sophomore forward Charles Clark. The second rotation will include much-anticipated junior college transfers Devon Baker (point guard) and Will Pratt (forward), along with redshirt freshman center James Hulbin, junior guard Logan McConathy and freshman forward Cory Dixon.

Also figuring into the playing rotation will be senior center Aramie Brooks and freshman point guard Shamir Davis.

I would like us to defend a lot better than we have so far, and to pick up well in full court defense,” said McConathy. “One thing we’ve done much better is take care of basketball and I would love to see that continue. We need to defend and rebound but most importantly, stop conversion by the opponent. The way we pressure, there should be a high tempo and lots of transition. Transition without conversion doesn’t put points on the board.”

The Tigers were 14-11 last year, including an 87-65 loss at NSU, under veteran coach Bert West, a former prep state championship-winning coach at nearby Zwolle High School.

“Bert’s such a great coach,” said McConathy. “He did such a great job at Zwolle, and has been so solid for a long while now at ETBU. It’s always a good battle. I would like to let the two teams play and let him and I sit at midcourt and just visit, and we’d probably learn a lot more about our teams that way, but that’s not the way it works.”

The game is an exhibition contest for ETBU, which opens its season Nov. 23 at LSU-Shreveport. Northwestern travels to Texas Tech next Thursday and is home again on Nov. 24 against Houston Baptist.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Three freshman Tennessee football
players are charged with an attempted armed robbery.
Knoxville police say wide receiver Nu’Keese Richardson and
defensive backs Janzen Jackson and Mike Edwards were arrested after
the incident early Thursday.
The victims told police they were in a parked vehicle near
Tennessee’s campus when two men, one brandishing a handgun,
approached. The suspects demanded whatever the victims had but left
empty-handed when victims showed they had no money.
The suspects drove off with a third man in a Toyota Prius.
Police located the car and the victims identified Richardson and
Edwards.
Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton says he is evaluating
the incident. It was not immediately clear if the players have
attorneys.

LSU’s Lee could get start against La. Tech

LSU's Lee could get start against La. Tech

<dc:subject>LSU's Lee could get start against La. Tech</dc:subject>

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Although Jordan Jefferson has returned
to practice this week, head coach Les Miles said he remains “a
little gimped,” keeping open the possibility that sophomore
Jarrett Lee will start for the first time since late last season.
Jefferson was still limping earlier this week because of the
lingering effects of his right ankle sprain during LSU’s 24-15 loss
at Alabama last Saturday
The loss dropped No. 9 LSU (7-2) out of contention for the
Southeastern Conference title, and by extension, a national
championship.
Still, the Tigers have an opportunity to finish the regular
season 10-2 and go to a major bowl game. The mission to accomplish
that starts this Saturday night when LSU hosts Louisiana Tech
(3-6), a team coming off a hard-fought 45-35 loss to No. 6 Boise
State.
At Alabama, Lee led the Tigers’ last four offensive series, one
covering 59 yards and ending with LSU’s second touchdown.
However, LSU gained only 9 yards on 11 snaps in the fourth
quarter.
LSU did not call passing plays often while Lee was in. He wound
up 4-of-10 for 44 yards with one interception on LSU’s final drive
with the Tigers trailing by nine and unlikely to come back.
Lee started eight games as a redshirt freshman in 2008 and
showed promise with 1,873 yards and 14 TD passes. Yet he is known
more for his 16 interceptions, seven of which were returned for
touchdowns.
Jefferson started the 2008 regular-season finale and the
Chick-fil-A Bowl and has started every game this season. The
19-year-old former Destrehan star has 1,535 yards passing and 12
TDs with only four interceptions in 210 attempts.
Lee has been the backup, playing very little until late in LSU’s
42-0 victory over Tulane, when Lee led a 98-yard drive.
“All season, I’ve been prepared,” Lee said. “I’ve been in
this system for a while now and know what the coaches want.
“Mentally - and it is tough - you’ve just got to be prepared,
watch film and practice, make sure you know what’s going on, know
the game plan. ... That’s part of being prepared when your time
comes.”
Lee has continued to throw as often as possible to LSU
receivers, particularly Brandon LaFell and Terrance Toliver.
Like Lee, those two are from Texas, and both have been
supportive.
      “He’s always had a great confidence ... and I think he’s really
learned a lot since last season,” Toliver said. “We’ve been
working with him all week, and he runs with the (first team) a lot
anyway, so we have good chemistry with him.
“I think he’s ready. He stepped in after Jordan got hurt and
led us down the field for a touchdown.”
Lee said he has “always been in sync with those guys. They’re
great players and great playmakers and the kind of guys you want to
get the ball to.”
If Lee starts, LSU’s offense could look different.
Jefferson is more of a dual running and passing threat than Lee.
Lee has a quicker release and stronger arm.
Toliver said he knows Lee will get rid of the ball quickly and
won’t be looking to run.
“We might pass a little more,” Tolliver said. “All he needs
is a little protection, and he can definitely get the ball off.”
It is unclear from the limited playing time Lee has seen whether
he has overcome last year’s problems.
“Obviously, in the back of your mind you don’t want that kind
of stuff to happen to you again. But you’ve got to wipe that out
and just keep moving forward,” Lee said.
If he starts, Lee said, “It will definitely be a different feel
and be exciting to be out there with these guys. I want to go out
there and play as hard as I can and make positive plays.”

move gives the Hornets the best opportunity “to reach our goals

Saints perfect at halfway point of NFL season

<dc:subject>Saints perfect at halfway point of NFL season</dc:subject>

By BRETT MARTEL
AP Sports Writer
METAIRIE, La. (AP) - Jabari Greer takes a cautious view of the
dramatic improvements made by the unbeaten Saints in only one
season.
“It’s a long season and people like to analyze where you are at
a certain point,” Greer said. “But as a competitor, you realize
it doesn’t matter until it’s over.
“If we continue to do this, then we have something special. But
if we don’t, we’re going to be the team that could have, you know?
That should have.”
With only half of their 2009 season in the books, the Saints
already have matched their win total from 2008, surpassed several
key statistical marks from all of last season and put themselves on
pace to improve significantly in other areas.
The biggest gains have come on defense.
Three fumble recoveries in a 30-20 win over Carolina on Sunday
gave New Orleans 24 takeaways this season, or two more than in all
of 2008.
Anthony Hargrove’s score on a short fumble return was the
Saints’ seventh defensive touchdown this season, compared to none
last year.
The Saints also have 16 interceptions this season after having
15 the year before.
Greer, a sixth-year cornerback in his first season with the
Saints, has been a key contributor to New Orleans’ increase in big
plays on defense. He has two interceptions and returned one of them
for a touchdown.
Still, in five previous years in the NFL, Greer agreed that “it
would seem unusual” for an NFL team to need only half a season to
eclipse 16-game totals for things like fumble recoveries and
interceptions.
At the same time, the Saints expected to make substantial gains
in those areas, he said, because “it’s something that we stress
every day during practice.”
Coach Sean Payton was quick to note that different personnel and
changes on the coaching staff - the Saints have a new defensive
coordinator in Gregg Williams - are bound to produce different
results.
“There are a lot of things that we can point to as to why we
were 8-8 a year ago,” Payton said. “The comparison of why we’re
playing better football this year, I would say we’re playing better
defense, we’re rushing the football better, we’re creating the
turnovers. Those are the three things that I don’t think we did
very well a year ago.”
The gains have been less dramatic with an offense that led the
NFL last season, but there is still evidence of improvement.
The Saints are averaging 144.6 yards rushing this season, 45
yards more per game than last season. The Saints are averaging 37.9
points per game, or about nine points per game more than last
season.
Some of that improvement has to do with the defensive scores,
but not all of it. At their current pace, the Saints would finish
with about 606 points, surpassing the NFL record 589 scored by the
2007 New England Patriots.
And the Saints have been much more dominant in the late stages
of games.
In 2008, New Orleans outscored opponents 127-100 in the fourth
quarter. So far this season, the Saints have a 91-18 fourth-quarter
edge - a big reason New Orleans has been able to secure comeback
victories in its past three games, pulling away to win two of those
by double digits.
Only one of the Saints’ victories - a 35-27 win over Atlanta -
has come by fewer than 10 points. They’ve won three times by 20
points or more.
Payton said he is proud of his players for finding various ways
to win games. It has been gratifying for him to see an emphasis
placed in certain areas - like takeaways and the running game -
followed by significant improvement in those areas.
Still, the fourth-year head coach remains concerned by fits of
sloppiness and offensive turnovers - New Orleans has turned the
ball over 10 times in its last three games - that have caused his
team to fall behind in recent weeks.
“We have to be more consistent,” Payton said. “I do think we
can play a lot better than we played (Sunday). And I’m not just
saying that because it’s time to come in here and throw water on a
party. ... We have to get some things cleaned up and we have to do
that before we sit in here and say it finally cost us a game.”

<dc:subject>Miles expects Jefferson back for stretch run</dc:subject>

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Although No. 9 LSU is out of the running
for a Southeastern Conference title, the Tigers expect starting
quarterback Jordan Jefferson to return this week for a stretch run
that still holds the promise of a New Year’s Day bowl bid.
“It appears that Jordan is going to be fine,” Miles said
Monday. “I expect him to be with us.”
Jefferson went to the sideline with a sprained ankle during the
second half of LSU’s 24-15 loss in Tuscaloosa last Saturday. He was
relieved by Jarrett Lee, who Miles said would practice with the
first team for part of this week.
“I’m certain that Jarrett will get more snaps than usual in
practice this week,” Miles said. “I expect the rotation will
change Wednesday.”
LSU is dealing with several injuries to key offensive players,
the worst being Charles Scott’s broken collar bone, which will
sideline the Tigers’ leading rusher for the remainder of the
season.
LSU also must try to overcome the psychological effect of last
weekend’s loss, which eliminated the Tigers from contention to win
the Southeastern Conference.
A victory over the No. 3 Crimson Tide would have put LSU in the
lead in the SEC Western Division, setting up a possible rematch
with Florida in the SEC title game, with the winner likely landing
in the BCS championship game.
“We’re going to bemoan the position we’re in now,” Miles said.
“There are things I’d like to do better myself. There are some
plays the players would like to get back. We didn’t finish like we
wanted the last game.
“Finishing second puts a nasty feeling in my stomach. I’d love
to say if we take care of business in the next three games, I like
the position we’ll be in. But, that won’t do us any good.”
LSU now must try to win out over Louisiana Tech, Mississippi and
Arkansas in its final three regular season games.
With Scott out, Miles said he expects Keiland Williams, Stevan
Ridley, Russell Shepard and Trindon Holliday to share the bulk of
the carries going forward.
On year ago, LSU did not respond well to a tough, overtime loss
against then No. 1 Alabama.
The Tigers went on to lose two of their last three regular
season games, finishing the regular season 7-5 before rebounding
with a lopsided victory over Georgia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
Because LSU’s only defeats this season have come against
top-ranked Florida and the No. 3 Crimson Tide, the Tigers remain in
the top 10 and are eighth in the BCS standings.
Miles expects his players to respond better to this season’s
Alabama loss.
“They understand they can be great team,” Miles said “They
are in position to put themselves in a very substantial bowl. ...
It’s hard to believe these guys won’t look forward to preparing for
the next game.”
