<dc:subject>Tiger Woods returns to golf, will play at The Masters</dc:subject>

By DOUG FERGUSON
AP Golf Writer
PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) - Tiger Woods said Tuesday he will return
to golf next month at the Masters, ending a four-month hiatus
brought on by a sex scandal that shattered his image as the gold
standard in sports.
“The Masters is where I won my first major and I view this
tournament with great respect,” Woods said in a statement. “After
a long and necessary time away from the game, I feel like I’m ready
to start my season at Augusta.”
Woods has not competed since Nov. 15 when he won the Australian
Masters for his 82nd victory worldwide. Twelve days later, he
crashed his car into a tree outside his Florida home, setting off
shocking revelations that he had been cheating on his wife.
The Associated Press first reported his plans to return at
Augusta National last Thursday.
“The major championships have always been a special focus in my
career and, as a professional, I think Augusta is where I need to
be, even though it’s been a while since I last played,” Woods
said.
“I have undergone almost two months of inpatient therapy and I
am continuing my treatment,” he said. “Although I’m returning to
competition, I still have a lot of work to do in my personal
life.”
There had been reports he would play the Tavistock Cup
exhibition next week in Orlando, followed by the Arnold Palmer
Invitational at Bay Hill, where he is the defending champion and a
six-time winner.
“When I finally got into a position to think about competitive
golf again, it became apparent to me that the Masters would be the
earliest I could play,” Woods said.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Wearing a bandage on what LSU coach Les
Miles said was a broken left hand, wide receiver Terrance Toliver
apologized to his teammates, coaches, family and fans for his role
in a fight at Reggie’s Bar early Sunday.
Toliver said Tuesday the incident was “out of character” and
“won’t happen again.”
Miles said Toliver, a senior-to-be, will be able to practice
during spring and summer, but will pay “a tremendous price.”
Miles said there won’t be a suspension involved.
Toliver had 53 catches for 735 yards and three touchdowns last
season.
Toliver and Dennis Harris, a redshirt freshman on the men’s

Toliver faces charges of disturbing the peace and resisting an

BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU-Northwestern State baseball game scheduled for Wednesday night in Shreveport has been postponed due to the inclement weather conditions in north Louisiana over the past few days.

The game has been re-scheduled for Tuesday, April 20 at 6 p.m. at Fair Grounds Field in Shreveport. The teams will also meet in a regularly-scheduled game on Wednesday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m. in Baton Rouge.

LSU coach Paul Mainieri said he spoke to Northwestern State coach J.P. Davis after the Tigers’ 18-7 win over UL-Monroe Tuesday night in Alex Box Stadium.

“Coach Davis told me the outfield was very soft due to the inordinate amount of rain in Shreveport, and there are more thundershowers forecast for tomorrow night,” Mainieri said. “The officials with Northwestern State and the Shreveport Captains thought it would be in everyone’s best interest to postpone the game, so we will plan to travel to Shreveport on April 20.”

“While we’re so disappointed that we won’t have the game tomorrow night, we want to make sure that the environment here is the best for the players on both teams and the great fans that helped make this a sellout crowd,” Captains VP/General Manager Craig Brasfield said. “We’re going to continue work our hardest to make this an event that everyone involved will be proud of.”

All tickets purchased for Wednesday’s game are good for the April 20 game. No refunds will be issued.

Top-ranked LSU’s next scheduled game is at 7 p.m. Friday when the Tigers open a three-game series with Kansas in Alex Box Stadium.

LSU opens spring football practice

      <dc:subject>LSU opens spring football practice</dc:subject>

By JIM KLEINPETER
The Times-Picayune
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A relentless rain chased LSU indoors for
its first day of spring football practice, but it didn’t dampen the
spirit of the two-hour workout.
With plenty of holes to fill on both sides of the ball and the
promise of competition and physicality, the workout in helmets on
Monday had a decidedly quicker pace than most.
That was by design, LSU Coach Les Miles said.
“We just want to provide a backdrop, so we can develop a
physical style,” said Miles, who just finished his fifth year as
Tigers’ coach. “We want to create a competition in a physical way.
I don’t know that anybody hits more than we do. We’re a contact
team, but I think there are some drills we can implement when we
get the pads on, putting guys on guys and see how they respond in
front of their peers.
“We’re going to move some guys around, look at different
things. It’s going to be a very productive spring.”
Miles felt after last season’s 9-4 campaign, his team wasn’t
physical enough. LSU ranked last in total offense in the
Southeastern Conference and 11th in rushing offense. Having to
replace 12 starters means there is legitimate competition at nearly
every position, and that competition isn’t going to be easy.
Miles said even the individual drills will become more physical,
and he’s planning to introduce some the players don’t know about.
But at least one player noticed the quicker pace.
“Practice was OK, but we didn’t have any pads on,” cornerback
Patrick Peterson said. “But you could see a little more fire in
the coaches eyes today. It’s going to get more competitive soon.”
Said linebacker Kelvin Sheppard: “It was physical last spring,
but we’ve got to have this going into the season with the kind of
schedule we have. We’ve got to get ready to take on good opponents
week in and week out, and you can’t do that without physicality in
practice.”
Part of being more physical means a more consistent running
game, and Miles said he likes what he saw in the competition at
running back. Holdovers Richard Murphy and Stevan Ridley are
getting pushed by redshirt freshman Michael Ford.
“Murphy and Ridley certainly are guys that look forward to
having an impact and playing well,” Miles said. “If you look back
and see how many plays they made on special teams, it lets you know
they’re ready to play. They are ready to make athletic plays and
contact plays. Michael Ford shows with his carries and little bit
of experience he has, that he has great athletic ability.”
Murphy especially is adamant to compete. The senior from
Rayville missed all but two games last season because of knee
surgery and his career has never gotten off the ground despite
great promise.
“That’s what motivated me in my rehab,” said Murphy, who is
seeking a sixth season of eligibility. “I know that this is a
position with a lot of competition. I’ve been waiting on this
moment all my life. I’m saying to myself every time I work out,
‘I’m not going to let this slip away now.’
“I work hard every day, and every time I get a chance to show
myself, I’m going to show the coaches.”
Murphy wore a green jersey signifying no contact, and Miles said
his first impulse is to keep Murphy out of live contact for the
remainder of spring drills. But Miles said that might change toward
the end.
Two players did not participate: junior safety Karnell Hatcher
and sophomore defensive tackle Josh Downs. Miles said Downs could
be out “a week or two,” and that Hatcher might miss all of spring
practice.
Fullback Thomas Parsons did not participate fully.
“He dropped a weight on his foot,” Miles said.
Miles said the team will do some scrimmaging in Saturday’s
workout.

Juan Pierre adjusts to life in the AL

<dc:subject>Juan Pierre adjusts to life in the AL</dc:subject>

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Juan Pierre is on a new team, in a new
league - and back at the same spring training complex as last year.
The outfielder for the Chicago White Sox returned to Camelback
Ranch, where he can see his former teammates just a few fields
over.
Pierre was ready to remain with the Los Angeles Dodger, even
though he had been bumped down to the fourth outfielder’s spot
since Manny Ramirez arrived in 2008.
“A lot of people forget about you when you don’t play, and I
think with the whole Manny thing, I got a little more exposure than
I probably ever had in my career,” Pierre said. “I played well
and it opened me up to teams realizing that I can still play, and
it ultimately got me over here (to the White Sox) where I can play
a little bit more.”
Pierre had come to accept his role with the Dodgers last year,
but when Ramirez was suspended for 50 games for violation of Major
League Baseball’s drug policy, Pierre was thrust back into the
limelight. He responded by batting .318 with 21 stolen bases from
May 7 to July 1, the length of Ramirez’ suspension.
Pierre became such a fan favorite for his play that fans who
wore “MannyWood” T-shirts in the left-field bleachers at Dodger
Stadium sported “JuanPierreWood” T-shirts with Pierre in the
lineup.
Pierre is reunited with White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who was
the third base coach for the Florida Marlins in 2003 when both were
part of the World Series championship team.
“He definitely hasn’t changed. Energetic. Speaks his mind,”
Pierre said. “Basically wants you to go out there and play hard.”
Pierre, a career National League player, is getting help with
his adjustment to the AL from his former minor-league teammate in
the Colorado Rockies’ farm system, Chone Figgins. Now with the
Seattle Mariners at their spring training facility up the freeway,
Figgins and Pierre are sharing a house during camp.
“We fish more than we talk about baseball,” Pierre said, “but
he’s giving me the heads-up on a lot of the American League
pitchers.”
Guillen has a one-liner about his new left fielder, too.
“Juan Pierre should be fine because he didn’t play for the last
two years. He’s very fresh,” Guillen said with a laugh. “A lot of
people think a leadoff hitter is easy to find. It’s not. We tried
to make a leadoff hitter out of that guy for the last three years,
(former prospect) Jerry Owens, and look at what happened. What we
have here is legit. He’s got experience. One thing about Juan, he
brings a lot of stuff off the field. He’s a leader, he’s a hard
worker, I think he’s a guy who brings enthusiasm to the game.”
NOTES: White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper said closer Bobby
Jenks is in need of more throwing after Jenks pitched at spring
training Sunday. Jenks and his wife had another child, the weather
in Chicago was bad and Jenks had difficulty finding someone to
catch him, so he was limited to playing soft toss, Cooper said.
“Bobby’s got a little bit different schedule because he was just a
tad behind,” Cooper said Tuesday in the team’s non-counting
exhibition game against the Dodgers, right-handers Gavin Floyd,
Daniel Cabrera, Carlos Torres and Daniel Hudson are expected to
pitch two innings each Rain in the greater Phoenix area limited
Sunday’s workout to pitchers throwing in the batting cage and
position players taking batting practice.

auction off for charity the New Orleans Saints flag he displayed
outside his office for losing a Super Bowl bet.
Daniels displayed the flag outside his Statehouse office for a
week after losing the bet to Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal on the
outcome of Super Bowl.
The Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 on Feb. 7.
The flag was listed Thursday on the online auction site eBay.com
for one week with an opening bid of $100. Daniels says he’ll sign
the flag before sending it to the winning bidder.
The Indiana Senate passed a resolution Thursday honoring the
Saints. It was sponsored by longtime Saints fan Sen. Jim Arnold.
The LaPorte Democrat promised he’d take home a Saints jersey he’s
been displaying in his Senate cubicle.
