<dc:subject>Brandon Bass hopes to talk to New Orleans Hornets in free agency</dc:subject>

The New Orleans Hornets are one of the teams former LSU forward Brandon Bass is considering in free agency, his agent Tony Dutt said Tuesday. Teams can begin negotiating with free agents at 12:01 Wednesday morning but players cannot sign contracts until July 8. One of the Hornets’ priorities is signing a backup power forward. Bass, a Baton Rouge native, played two seasons with the Hornets before signing a free-agent deal with the Dallas Mavericks in 2007. In two seasons in Dallas, Bass has emerged as an effective rebounder and mid-range scorer. As a backup last season, Bass averaged 8.5 points and 4.5 rebounds. “Just looking at my list, they are obviously on it,’’ Dutt said. “I would hope and think that they would have interest. We are definitely open minded.’’ Bass is expected to draw interest from several teams, including the Dallas Mavericks and New Jersey Nets.

League’s 3rd Mid-Summer Star-Fest Set for Cozy Bringhurst Field Continental Baseball League’s All-Star Game
Comes to Alexandria For First Time on July 7 Home Run Derby Contest Set Before Game

Alexandria, LA, June 29, 2009 – The best of the best in the Continental Baseball League, featuring top players from the circuit’s six teams, will convene on the evening of July 7 at historic Bringhurst Field, a setting that is celebrating its 75th season of baseball. The CBL All-Star Game will be a Texas vs. Louisiana format and is sponsored by Burger King, Capital One, Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, Moran Capital Management, and Mid-State Orthopaedic Clinic & Sports Medicine.

“This is what it’s all about, a chance for our featured players to face off against each other for one game, in front of a great crowd, and to showcase their skills,” said CBL commissioner Ron Baron. “We’re very proud of the job that Alexandria has done this season, both on and off the field, and we believe this will be our most attractive All-Star Game in our history.”

In two seasons, 15 CBL players have moved on to affiliated baseball, and contests such as the All-Star Game and the CBL Ferguson Jenkins Championship Series, set for later in August, are contests that draw added attention, noted CBL director of baseball operations Bob Ibach. “I’ve seen more than 20 major league All-Star Games either as a reporter covering the Baltimore Orioles, or during my 10 years with the Chicago Cubs, and anytime you can gather your best talent in one location for one game, that event makes it even a bigger opportunity for a promising youngster to showcase his skills to not only fans, but to scouts who cover the game.”

The Alexandria Aces lead the CBL in both the standings and average attendance in 2009. Coming into this weekend’s scheduled games, the Aces, under the direction of president and CEO Eric Moran, general manager Andrew Aguilar, and field manager Dan Shwam, have a first place record of 18-9 in a very tight race. The Texarkana Gunslingers and Bay Area Toros are just one game back, followed closely by the South Louisiana Pipeliners and Big Bend Cowboys.

The host Aces are enjoying their first season in the CBL, after 13 successful seasons in other independent baseball leagues. It is the first time in the long history of Aces baseball that the pro team is under local ownership, a move that has been well received by its loyal fans. Alexandria’s home attendance easily tops the CBL, drawing more than 1,300 per contest.

Students bike across America to build awareness and shelter for the needy

ALEXANDRIA—Thirty-two college students will arrive in Alexandria, La., on July 3 as part of a cross-country bike trip to raise awareness about the need for affordable housing and to help provide it. Alexandria is just one of the stops on Bike & Build’s Southern US 2009 tour, which will total 3,510 miles by the time the 32 young adults reach San Francisco, Calif. on August 14.

Bike & Build raises funds and awareness for affordable housing projects as cyclists make their way across the country. Along the Southern US tour, the group will stop in six cities to build homes with local housing organizations. After six seasons of the charitable program, Bike & Build has contributed $1.6 million to housing groups to fund projects planned and executed by the young adults making the cross-country journey.

The Southern US 2009 tour began in Jacksonville, Fla., on June 10 and has raised $148,304 for affordable housing builds so far. By the time the tour reaches Alexandria, the group will have biked 844 miles.

Bike & Build was founded in 2002 by Marc Bush. More than 550 riders have participated since the organization was created and can now choose between eight routes across the country. The Southern US route makes its way through Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California.

To learn more about Bike & Build or to make a donation to the Southern US team, visit http://www.bikeandbuild.org.

Bike & Build is pedaling to end poverty housing. Through fund-raising cycling trips, Bike & Build raises money for and awareness of affordable housing efforts. Our events act as a catalyst to build homes, foster the spirit of service, and empower young adults…mile by mile, house by house.

five others commemorating national title teams in 1991, 1993, 1996,
1997 and 2000.

Hornets looking for bench help in Draft

<dc:subject>Hornets looking for bench help in Draft</dc:subject>

WESTWEGO, La. (AP) - New Orleans’ sobering first-round exit from
the NBA playoffs only ramped up the workload for Byron Scott.
The Hornets’ coach said this offseason has been his busiest
since he arrived in New Orleans five years ago, with more days
consumed by meetings with general manager Jeff Bower and more time
spent watching video of draft prospects.
“We dove into it big-time,” Scott said this week as he and
Bower prepared for Thursday night’s NBA draft. “We’ve talked and
had more meetings this summer than we have in the last
year-and-a-half or two. We both understand how important this is to
make sure we do get it right.”
The Hornets, who pick 21st, appear to be taking a conservative
approach. They’ve said they won’t gamble on a high-risk project
that could take several years yield major dividends. They’re not
looking for a starter, knowing the odds are against finding such a
player in the latter third of the first-round.
New Orleans’ starting five can be exceptional if they have some
luck avoiding injuries, as they did two seasons ago. What the
Hornets seek is help off the bench for their All-Star tandem of
point guard Chris Paul and power forward David West, who often
played more than 40 minutes a game to keep the Hornets in playoff
contention in the last months of the season and looked worn down by
the end of it.
“I look at the history of the 21st pick and most players
selected in that position are bench players, especially early in
their NBA careers,” Bower said. “We’re hopeful that we can add
... someone that can come in and compete for time and for minutes
to help us. That probably would be off the bench given the location
of the pick.”
The past three players picked at 21 have been as good or better
than what Bower has talked about drafting.
Last year’s 21st pick, forward Ryan Anderson, averaged 7.4
points and 4.7 in about 20 minutes a game for the New Jersey Nets.
In 2007, Philadelphia chose guard Daequan Cook, who averaged
nearly 9 points and three rebounds in about 24 minutes per game in
his rookie season.
The 21st pick in 2006 was Celtics guard Rajon Rondo, who played
a key role in Boston’s most recent NBA title in only his second
season.
The Hornets did not have any picks last year. They sold their
27th overall pick for about $3 million. Their second-round pick had
been traded away earlier, as was this year’s second-rounder.
With their lone pick this year, the Hornets want a heady and
fundamentally sound forward or guard who has the work ethic and
endurance to quickly adapt to the up-tempo transition game the
Hornets play.
Most of the 22 prospects attending the Hornets pre-draft
workouts in recent weeks fit that mold. The Hornets also have
scouted some prospects who declined invitations to New Orleans
because of conflicts or their agents feared it would be perceived
as an admission that the player might not be selected higher.
Scott said he did not expect the Hornets to pick a center
because, “If a 7-(foot)-1 guy is available at 21, believe me, he’s
a project. He’s not going to be a guy that can come in right away
and help us.”
At guard, the Hornets have taken careful looks at players like
Wayne Ellington of North Carolina, Gerald Henderson of Duke, Marcus
Thornton of LSU and Patrick Mills of St. Mary’s (Calif.). Thornton,
the SEC player of the year, and Mills, who played for Australia’s
2008 Olympic team, both worked out for the Hornets. Other guards
who worked out at New Orleans’ suburban training center included
UCLA’s Darren Collison, VCU’s Eric Maynor and Gonzaga’s Jeremy
Pargo, younger brother of former Hornet Jannero Pargo.
Scott gushed about Mills, saying he’d proved he could score
against the best in the Olympics - he scored 20 against Team USA -
and completed endurance tests faster than any prospect who worked
out for New Orleans.
“He’s in unbelievable condition,” Scott said. “He didn’t have
a fatigue factor. He just ran all day. ... He can flat out put it
up. He can score. He’s a hell of a player.”
At forward, the Hornets worked out Tyler Hansbrough of North
Carolina, Chase Budinger of Arizona, Sam Young of Pittsburgh, and
Taj Gibson of USC, among others. Pitt’s DeJuan Blair, who did not
visit, would be another prospect of interest if available.
The Hornets spoke highly of Hansbrough, with Scott saying the
UNC star did not get enough credit for his athleticism and shooting
ability. Still, Scott said he’d be surprised to see Hansbrough
available at 21.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Freshman Taylor Jungmann limited LSU to five
hits in his first complete game, and Russell Moldenhauer hit his
record-tying fourth home run of the College World Series as Texas
evened the best-of-three finals, 5-1 over LSU on Tuesday night.
      The top-seeded Longhorns (50-15-1) forced a winner-take-all game
Wednesday night for the national championship. LSU (55-17), ranked
No. 1 in the major polls, lost for the first time in 15 games.
Jungmann, who threw six pitches all for balls in a short relief
appearance in Game 1 Monday, struck out nine against an LSU offense
that averaged 9.5 runs in its first four CWS games.
Jungmann (11-3) won his third game in Omaha - the other two were
in relief - and he pitched the first complete game in the CWS since
2006.
LSU starter Aaron Ross (6-8) lasted only two innings in his
first CWS start.
Preston Clark homered for a 2-0 lead in the second and finished
with three hits and two RBIs.
Moldenhauer’s surprising show of power continued. He came to
Omaha with no home runs this season and became the 10th player to
hit four in a CWS when he sent a high fly over the right-center
field fence off Ryan Byrd in the third.
Jungmann had never pitched more than 7 2-3 innings. He gave up a
triple to DJ LeMahieu leading off the third in addition to four
singles.
LSU scored on shortstop Brandon Loy’s fielding error in the
second. The Tigers got the leadoff man on base to start four
innings after that, but couldn’t score.
LeMahieu tripled into the right-field corner to start the third,
and Jungmann walked Blake Dean with one out. Jungmann struck out
Micah Gibbs and got Mike Mahtook to ground out.
Jungmann got a big defensive play from second baseman Travis
Tucker with a runner on first base in the fourth. Tucker went into
the hole to backhand Derek Helenihi’s grounder up the middle,
underhanded the ball to Loy, who made the throw to first to
complete the inning-ending double play.
In the sixth, Dean reached on an infield single and took another
base when Tucker let the ball get past him as he backed up first.
But Dean left second base too early on Gibbs’ fly to center and, as
he was standing on third, was called out when Jungmann threw back
to Tucker at second.
The Longhorns scored all five runs in the first three innings
and mustered only four singles the rest of the way.
LSU left fielder Leon Landry robbed Kevin Keyes of extra bases
in the fifth, his body going parallel to the ground as he laid out
to snag Keyes’ drive into the corner.

      <dc:subject>Mahtook single in 11th gives LSU 7-6 CWS win</dc:subject>

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - LSU short-circuited Texas’ power surge Monday
night.
Freshman Mikie Mahtook singled in the winning run in the top of
the 11th inning after DJ LeMahieu tied the game in the ninth, and
LSU survived Texas’ five home runs to beat the Longhorns 7-6 in
Game 1 of the College World Series finals.
“I’ve been fortunate to be around some kids who have played
some great games through the years, and I savor all the victories,
but this one was really sweet,” LSU coach Paul Mainieri said. “On
the biggest stage, with their backs against the wall, to come up
with that kind of an effort is one for the ages.”
LSU (55-16) would win its sixth national title with a victory
over the Longhorns (49-15-1) on Tuesday night.
LeMahieu walked leading off the 11th against Brandon Workman
(3-4), stole second with two outs and took third when catcher
Cameron Rupp’s throw went into center field.
Mahtook delivered after struggling his first four at-bats. He
required intravenous fluids to treat cramps in the sixth inning,
and he struck out three times and hit into a double play. He
punched a single into right field in the 10th before facing Workman
in the 11th.
“My first three at-bats, it wasn’t like I just struck out. It
was three terrible at-bats. I was chasing balls in the dirt,”
Mahtook said. “I stayed back on a change-up and bounced into a
double play. When I got into the dugout, guys were telling me to
make sure I keep my head straight. Jared Mitchell told me I was
going to come back up again with a big at-bat, and you’re going to
come through for us. That helped me out a lot.”
Matty Ott (4-2) struck out Brandon Loy and Tim Maitland and got
Connor Rowe to ground out to finish off Texas, which had walkoff
wins in two of its first three CWS games.
“It has to happen some time. We can’t have all the glorious
game-ending victories,” said Russell Moldenhauer, who hit two of
Texas’ homers. “We’ve got to throw that aside and come back with
the same feeling we had at the beginning of this game.”
The Tigers, who won their 14th straight, came back from deficits
of 3-1 and 6-4. LeMahieu hit the tying, two-out double in the top
of the ninth off Austin Dicharry. LeMahieu and Ryan Schimpf also
homered for the Tigers.
Texas, trying to become the first No. 1 national seed since
Miami in 1999 to win the championship, continued its show of power.
The Longhorns came to Omaha with 39 homers in 61 games, but have 11
in four games here.
Texas is better known for playing small ball: The Longhorns are
only the fifth team to record more than 100 sacrifice bunts in a
season.
But the wind has been blowing out at hitter-friendly Rosenblatt
Stadium.
All three of Moldenhauer’s homers this season have come in the
CWS. He was one of three Longhorns to go deep in the fourth inning,
and he broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth with his opposite-field shot to
left.
Travis Tucker and Kevin Keyes also homered in the fourth, and
Rowe did it in the seventh.
“How do I explain it? We’re not playing at Disch-Falk. That
field just swallows the ball,” Moldenhauer said of Texas’ home
stadium. “We’re at a little bit smaller ballpark, and that has
helped out the offense.”
Over a span of 6 1-3 innings, from their previous game against
Arizona State to Monday’s matchup with LSU, seven of the Longhorns’
11 hits were home runs.
Texas is the first team since LSU in 1998 to homer three times
in an inning at the CWS. All five Texas homers were solo shots off
LSU starter Louis Coleman.
“It was great to see the rest of the team pick up Coleman,”
Mainieri said. “He felt he let his team down. The balls were
flying out of the ballpark. I’m not saying they were cheap. But if
you got the ball up in the air today, it had a chance to go out.”
In the LSU ninth, Sean Ochinko singled off Austin Wood and Derek
Helenihi was walked by Taylor Jungmann. Dicharry came on and struck
out Tyler Hanover before LeMahieu doubled into the left-field
corner to tie it.
LSU’s bullpen held the Longhorns hitless over the last five
innings. Ott worked the last three, striking out three.
Texas coach Augie Garrido said his players only need to look
back at last year’s finals to see it’s possible to come back after
losing Game 1.
“Georgia wiped out Fresno State in the first game last year and
was ahead in the second game,” Garrido said. “Fresno came back
and waltzed off with the national championship on the third day.”
