Tiger Woods returns to golf, will play at The Masters

<dc:subject>Tiger Woods returns to golf, will play at The Masters</dc:subject>

By DOUG FERGUSON
AP Golf Writer
PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) - Tiger Woods said Tuesday he will return
to golf next month at the Masters, ending a four-month hiatus
brought on by a sex scandal that shattered his image as the gold
standard in sports.
“The Masters is where I won my first major and I view this
tournament with great respect,” Woods said in a statement. “After
a long and necessary time away from the game, I feel like I’m ready
to start my season at Augusta.”
Woods has not competed since Nov. 15 when he won the Australian
Masters for his 82nd victory worldwide. Twelve days later, he
crashed his car into a tree outside his Florida home, setting off
shocking revelations that he had been cheating on his wife.
The Associated Press first reported his plans to return at
Augusta National last Thursday.
“The major championships have always been a special focus in my
career and, as a professional, I think Augusta is where I need to
be, even though it’s been a while since I last played,” Woods
said.
“I have undergone almost two months of inpatient therapy and I
am continuing my treatment,” he said. “Although I’m returning to
competition, I still have a lot of work to do in my personal
life.”
There had been reports he would play the Tavistock Cup
exhibition next week in Orlando, followed by the Arnold Palmer
Invitational at Bay Hill, where he is the defending champion and a
six-time winner.
“When I finally got into a position to think about competitive
golf again, it became apparent to me that the Masters would be the
earliest I could play,” Woods said.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The first woman chief justice of the
Louisiana Supreme Court suffered a stroke on Sunday and was in
intensive care.
Chief Justice Catherine “Kitty” Kimball had an ischemic
stroke, underwent a successful procedure to remove the blockage and
was in recovery, according to a statement from the Supreme Court
that was confirmed by public information officer Valerie Willard.
The 64-year-old Kimball of Ventress has been chief justice since
January 2009, after serving as an associate justice from 1992 to
2008. She is the first woman elected to the state’s highest court.
She had been a district court judge and an assistant district
attorney.
Kimball, a native of Alexandria and a 1970 graduate of LSU’s law
school, was first elected to the Court in 1992 and was re-elected
in 1998 and 2008.
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and others have credited Kimball
with playing a leading role in resuscitating the region’s court
system after Hurricane Katrina struck in August 2005.
Kimball, a Democrat, replaced Chief Justice Pascal Calogero, who
retired after 36 years on the Supreme Court, including 18 years as
chief.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Department of
Environmental Quality says 28 parishes in Louisiana could find
themselves outside new proposed Environmental Protection Agency
limits on lung-damaging smog.
The new proposed limits could more than double the number of
U.S. counties in violation. Costs of compliance could be in the
tens of billions of dollars, but the government said the rules
would save other billions - as well as lives - in the long run.
DEQ Secretary Harold Leggett says EPA’s announcement “does not
mean that the air quality in Louisiana is worse than it was
yesterday ... in fact, the air quality in Louisiana is the best it
has ever been.”
DEQ said it is evaluating EPA’s proposal to determine how it
might affect Louisiana.

OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - Eula M. Savoie, founder and president of
Savoie’s Sausage and Food Products Inc. of Opelousas, died
Wednesday in Opelousas General Hospital, a company official said.
She was 83.
Savoie had been hospitalized since breaking some ribs in a fall
a couple of weeks ago, said Freddie Lafleur, executive vice
president of the company.
      Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
Savoie and her husband, Tom, began making sausage in 1955, when
the price of hogs fell so low they couldn’t afford to keep their
pigs, according to a history on the company’s Web site.
They held a “boucherie,” a community gathering to kill hogs,
make sausage and other pork products, and enjoy eating them. Later,
they sold smoked sausage and boudin through the country store they
had bought in 1949, adding more products.
“The country store is still here, still open,” Lafleur said.
He said Savoie bought out her husband in 1976, about the time
they divorced. Her son and daughter work in the company’s marketing
division, he said.
The company bought Acadian Fine Foods LLC of Church Point in
2000, adding seafood pies and Cajun entrees to a products list that
included roux, hogshead cheese and smoked meats including beef and
turkey.
“In the early years she did a lot of the work herself. She
would be in charge of production, then go into stores and do demos,
pick up new stores. She was a real ball of fire,” Lafleur said.
Medical problems made her less active in the last few years, but
she remained company president, he said.
Savoie now has slightly over 100 employees and sells to grocery
stores in Louisiana, east Texas and the Mississippi Gulf Coast, to
some food service chains, the Publix grocery chain in Florida, and
a couple of Chicago restaurants, Lafleur said.
