Events in Pineville, at Fort Polk; Thursday In Alexandria

<dc:subject>Events in Pineville, at Fort Polk; Thursday In Alexandria</dc:subject>

Here are some of the area events for Veteran’s Day:

PINEVILLE:
The City of Pineville and the Alexandria Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) are pleased to announce a joint effort to promote a full day of events on the grounds of the VA Medical Center, at 2495 Shreveport Highway, in Pineville.

One of the biggest changes involves moving the parade back to the VAMC grounds. Pineville Mayor Clarence Fields says moving the parade back to the VAMC is in the best interest of everyone involved. “When were approached in 2002 about hosting the parade downtown for the first time, we were glad to help it expand. However, there has been a renewed effort to put all the day’s activities back at the VA, so now we can spend the day together remembering everyone’s sacrifice”.

Barbara Watkins, Medical Center Director, says November 11th should be a very special day. “This gives us the opportunity to honor each of the men and women who uttered the words of the soldier’s oath, a decision that changed their lives forever. Please join us at 10 a.m. for the parade and at 1 p.m. for a Veterans Day Program, to not only acknowledge those that have served this nation so well, but to put a little red, white and blue back into your spirit.”

Watkins added that there are a lot of reasons to centralize the day’s activities. “Bringing the Veterans Day Parade to the beautiful grounds of the VA Medical Center allows us to recognize more of those for which this day is set aside. All citizens can attend the parade, the formal afternoon program and then take a moment to visit with some of our Veterans in the hospital or our community living center. This is our opportunity to thank our Veterans for their courage and sacrifice to this nation.”

In addition the parade being downtown, the afternoon remembrance service had also been downtown at the National Cemetery, but was moved back to the VAMC Auditorium last year. Now, the day will include the parade at 10:00am, a hot dog lunch on the grounds, and then at 1:00pm, the Veterans Day Program in the VAMC Auditorium. This year’s guest speaker will be Lane Carson, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs.

For more information call Tammie Arnold, VAMC-PAO, at 318-466-2061 or Rich Dupree at 318-449-5650.

FORT POLK:

A Veterans Day observance is scheduled for Wednesday at
9:30 a.m. at post headquarters here.

U.S. Rep. John Fleming will be the guest speaker. Two wreaths will be laid:
One by Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk Commander, Brig. Gen.
James Yarbrough, and post Command Sgt. Maj. Christopher Greca; the other by
retired Col. Clarence Woods of the Leesville chapter of Veterans of Foreign
Wars, retired Command Sgt. Maj. Jim Myrick of the Military Order of the
Purple Heart, retired Staff Sgt. Kevin Wenthe of Disabled American Veterans,
and Louis Dechert.

The ceremony will feature a salute firing by Soldiers of the 5th Battalion,
25th Field Artillery, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. Sgt.
1st Class Sunnydale Hyde will be the featured musician.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved to the Warrior
Community Center.

ALEXANDRIA:

A brief ceremony honoring veterans of all military branches will be held on Thursday, November 12 at 11:30am. The public is invited to attend.

This special tribute, including a “wreath-laying”, will take place at Alexandria City Hall on the Veterans Memorial Plaza, facing Third Street. The ceremony takes place to offer the opportunity for citizens to again visit the plaza and reflect upon its meaning and symbolism in central Louisiana.

The Alexandria Veterans Memorial Plaza was dedicated on November 11, 1999 in memory of former Alexandria City Councilman, Bob Lawrence. Its design honors all military branches as represented by their seals mounted on the memorial and is dedicated to those men and women of Alexandria who served in the United States Military, during peacetime and wartime.

At the plaza’s entrance is a sculpture by local artist, Morris Taft Thomas, five wings representing the five branches of the United States armed services.

For additional information please contact the Alexandria/Pineville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau at (318) 442-9546.
